Can’t iTouch This

I see my number of readers has gone up a tad in the last couple of days. So for the newbies, be warned: my opinions are backward and ill-informed, so read on if you dare!

ipod-touch-itunes-wi-fi.jpgWell, in an attempt to flex its technological muscles, Apple has come up with the new iPod Touch. What is this new product? I'll tell you. It's an iPhone, minus the phone part. It's essentially Steve Jobs' version of a PDA, touting such features as Wi-Fi, multi-touch capabilities, and a "gorgeous 3.5-inch widescreen display," not to mention direct music downloads from iTunes, all packed into a stylish device only Apple could design.

Here's why I'm not too thrilled with the iPod Touch. I think Apple just rushed out this product to compensate for what we now know was too great an aspiration for the iPhone. The iPod Touch is just a waste of a product, because it really doesn't present anything that isn't available on a more cost-efficient product, and anyone who can afford it can no doubt afford the extra cash to go ahead and get an iPhone anyways. I've always known Apple to be an innovator, and the iPod Touch simply falls short of that reputation.

The purpose of the Ipod Touch, IMHO, is to give people who have money to buy an iPod, but not an iPhone, a chance to have the stupid status symbol that is the iPhone.

The idea of saving up money is somehow lost on Americans...

While much of what you say leaves an ugly taste in my mouth, it's your site, you can offend whoever you want to offend-- or whatever. Freedom of speech.

Thanks for the Garage Band App idea, I find the quality of my iMac intenal mic to be very good. My MBP mic is of worse quality, but probably just the same as yours.

I did subscribe to your podcast, mostly because I found myself saying that stuff about McKinley when I was there-- and it is refreshing to hear that things bad don't change.

Now onto ideas for my own podcast.

"Live From the Lake, a Muskie's Podcast" ?

    Nope, doesn't have impact.

Phil, I think you might want to re-crunch your numbers this time.

You suggest that the iPod Touch was produced

to compensate for what we now know was too great an aspiration for the iPhone.

Based on what? In other words, what is your standard for determining what the "appropriate" aspiration was in the first place? It seems like selling 1 million iPhones in 74 days is [understatement]not that bad[/understatement].

    You also suggest that

The iPod Touch is just a waste of a product, because it really doesn’t present anything that isn’t available on a more cost-efficient product,

Exactly what are those devices? You must not have actually held or used an iPhone or iPod Touch. If so, you would have seen that there is no other device, and certainly not one of equal or lesser cost, that has a full internet browser, the screen resolution, and the ease of use/stability only Apple products provide.

If I were a guessing man, I'd say most of the criticism of the iPhone and iPod Touch comes from people trying to make themselves feel better about what they wish they had, but don't. :-)
